Academics

Our Curriculum

The educational program at the Living Education Center is both interdisciplinary and experiential. Students receive credit in academic courses based on 180 hours of academic study and active participation in all subjects required by the Commonwealth of Virginia. LEC staff works with individual students to craft an academic plan that is best tailored to personal goals and objectives. In this way, a student's experiences, courses and transcript become an academic resume tailored to maximize educational and vocational options for the future.

English

LEC's English program includes Reading and Writing Workshop, which develops a comfortable familiarity with the written word and basic skills, and Literature and Composition which develops deeper critical thinking and essay writing skills. Electives include Writing Creative, Nature Writing, Shakespeare and Rhetoric and Public Discourse.

Math

LEC offers classes in PreAlgebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Intermediate Mathematics, Calculus and Applied Math. We use the highly regarded Saxon Math Series and utilize small groups (3-4 per teacher) to facilitate learning.

Social Studies

In addition to basic World History, LEC classes dig deeper into the history of indigenous and native cultures, philosophies and religions. Howard Zinn's People's History of the United States provides the framework for American History studies. LEC also offers classes in Political Science and Politics, Media Studies and Propaganda, Globalization and Privatization. Government classes focus on city, county, state, federal and national government structures and dynamics as well as the political theories that give rise to them. Revolutions looks at the relationship between social and political revolutions and the personal passions and immediate revolutions that drive the lives of students.

Art and Music

LEC offers a broad range of art and music classes. Often they are determined by specific talents, desires and needs of individual students. A specific desire or request to learn a specific medium leads to creating such a class. Studio Art lets students choose thri own medium of expression. Other classes include Photography, Cartooning, Graffiti and Poster Art, American Art History, Art Box/Contemporary Art, and Paper and Print Making are art electives . Music classes include Music Theory, American Music, History of Blues and Jazz, Classical Music, Composition and Songwriting, Guitar Ensemble World Music and African Drumming. In addition, LEC facilitates individual music or art apprenticeships or "one-on-one" classes with local artists or musicians who act as mentors and teachers.

Sciences

LEC sciences focus on theory and practice and include extensive field lab work. Introductory lab experiences are included in LEC science curriculum. Basic Chemistry is included in Environmental Science, Biology, Food Science and Physics classes. Students requiring the intensive lab science studies of Chemistry Lab are encouraged to take the class at PVCC or UVA summer programs.

Physical Education

LEC's classes focus on the interplay of body and mind and kinesthetic learning. LEC students hike all over town in addition to hiking day and overnight field trips and participate in Yoga, Aikido, T'ai Chi, Karate and Dance classes.

Work Study/Community Service

LEC's Community Education Projects involve students in direct community service. Students are encouraged to engage in additional community service, job training and employment. LEC students receive one half credit for 150 hours "on the job", with the positive evaluation of their supervisor.
LEC students are encouraged to follow their desires in pursuing classes and experiences not available at LEC. Students can receive academic credit for private or public classes (90 hours= 1/2 credit) with a positive evaluation by their instructor. Examples are apprenticeships, private lessons in music, theater classes or productions, sports programs or private art lessons.
