An important part of the LEC mission is to be a positive force in the community by creating, producing, supporting and participating in projects that benefit the entire community.SCHENKS BRANCH RESTORATION PROJECTIn 1998, Zap McConnell’s Senior Girls Stream Ecology Class decided that if you could "adopt a street", why not "adopt a stream?" They approached the City of Charlottesville with the idea and so began Charlottesville’s Adopt a Stream Program with LEC adopting Schenk’s Branch. Schenk’s branch has a history of abuse and neglect, an urban stream that no one paid much attention to, and that was in dire ecological straits. Since that time LEC has used Schenk’s Branch as a living laboratory, performing water testing, on site monitoring biological inventories and organizing community stream clean ups. Thanks to our work, in April, 2007, Schenk’s Greenway was created, Charlottesville’s newest city park. Our vision is for Schenk’s Branch to become an gem in our community. It takes ongoing action and vigilance to protect and restore an urban stream and LEC continues to monitor point and non-point source pollution and roadbuilding projects that threaten the present and future health of Schenk’s Branch. THE TREEHUGGER’s BALLEvery spring, LEC organizes the Treehugger’s Ball. This is a fun-raising event for the whole family and is an opportunity for us to raise money and support for both our own scholarship fund and for a local environmental organization. In 2006, LEC raised a significant amount of money for Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation. In 2007 and again on May 10, 2008, our partner group is Wild Virginia.
